This is my ultimate of must haves, would like to haves, and forget about haves (is that even a word) to get you started on your ultimate knitting adventure.

The thing I love about learning how to knit is that you can make it as inexpensive or expensive as you want.
It’s a hobby that requires few knitting tools. Though there are a TON of fun and quirky knitting supplies to enjoy as well!
Knitting Supplies for Beginners: What Do I Need to Begin Knitting?
When you want to learn how to knit, these are my favorite knitting supplies for beginners:
- Knitting Needles: When I first learned how to knit, I absolutely made SO many mistakes. One of them was picking the WRONG needles to start with!

These knitting needles are my tried and true best friend for beginning knitters.
- Knitters Pride Knitting Needle Size 10.5
- Bamboo Knitting Needle Set Sizes 7, 9, 10, 12
- Chiagoo Wooden Needles US Size 15
Knitter’s Pride: This is my absolute favorite brand of knitting needles.
If you are ready to jump off the deep in, recommend this set of wooden knitting needles. You get 7 pairs of knitting needles sizes US 2.5 to US 11.
This kit actually is a great way to save money in the long run!

2. Yarn: Oh me, oh my it’s yarn porn time! If you want to knit, you have to have yarn baby.
Yarn is the bread and butter of knitting. Without it, you would be some weirdo with short stabby looking sticks.
When you are a beginning knitter, these are my favorite brands of yarn for beginners.
They don’t split too much, they don’t have too much fluff, and they don’t have teeny tiny sizes that you can’t see.

TOP tip for beginner knitters: Let the yarn do the work! Using bright colored yarns that have various colors on them will give your work a fun POP!
And it looks like you did WAY more work than you did!

The other important part about picking your yarn, is to started with worsted weight yarn. This is a great size so you don’t get overwhelmed by not being able to see your stitches.

Sugar and cream is another great beginning knitting yarn. It’s 100% cotton, and I use it for ssooooooo many things from my easy beginner washcloths to easy homemade dish towels. My tarot card bag is even made with this yarn. It’s an inexpensive yarn and very versatile.
Knitting Notions: Finish Your Work in Progress
3. Tapestry Needle: This knitting tool sounds fancy, schmancy but it’s a needle to weave in your ends.
Without a good tapestry needle, your won’t ever go from work in progress to finished project!

4. Tape Measure: Having a tape measure handy, helps you know how long your work is.
You can get away with a boring old cloth tape measure, or you can be razzle dazzle and get one of these fun ones:

Crochet Fox Tape Measure: How cute is this ?!?!

This fun tape measure is super sneaky. You can’t even tell it’s a tape measure.
Knitting Organization: Start Out on the Right Foot.
Next up are my favorite list of goodies that are fun to have to keep all your knitting tools and supplies together.
These make it easier to keep your knitting goodies all in one place! (Trust me it is NOT fun trying to find your what you need to finish your project)
5. Knitting Notions Case:
It’s important to keep your knitting supplies organized. It is easy to do with the right tools.
It’s important to stay organized from the start. Thus, it’s important to keep your knitting notions in a knitting notion case.

For example, I keep all my knitting notions and tools together. I use a travel pill case as my knitting notions case, and a zipper pouch for larger knitting tools.
The knitting notions case about the size of the palm of my hand. Plus it has cute little compartments that are perfect for all my notions!
A small makeup pouch or small bag with a zipper is great too! It’s small portable, and will keep all your goodies together.

I love finding crafters on Etsy to support. They usually have some SUPER, DUPER fun and cute patterns you won’t find anywhere else.
Um, hello. LERV the pug pouch above.

6. Stitch Markers: Stitch Markers are another good knitting tool to have.
They aren’t required when you are first learning how to knit, but they help if you don’t want to count your stitches.
OVER and OVER and OVER again!
You can get some basic stitch markers for when you first start. For example, these plastic stitch markers here would work.

If you are feeling a little more adventurous, you can find some really FUN knitting stitch markers. I adore the stitch markers I’ve gotten from Etsy. For example, these mermaid scale stitch markers are one of my favorites.

Want a nightmare? You are excited about your first knitting project.
You put it down to find out all your work has fallen off of your needles!
{{INSERT SCREAM OF HORROR HERE}}
One way to keep that from happening is to have knitting needle stoppers.
These handy dandy knitting notions, fit really easy on the tips of your knitting needles, and fit in your knitting notions case.
When you have to stop in the middle of a project you can cap it off.
Your knitting work is saved, HOORAY! No more nightmares of projects undone and tangled.
